On Google Books, I found an article from the September 8, 1966 issue of the African-American publication Jet magazine, which states that “only a handful of Negroes” were visible at a Beatles concert in Memphis, Tennessee, even though the audience was over 20,000 people. However, one of the African-American fans present was the R&B singer Carla Thomas, which dovetails with Jeremy White’s observation that the Beatles had a lot of respect and admiration from African-American musicians. The article also has a photograph of the Beatles with the R&B singer Bobby Hebb, although in this case, it looks like Mr. Hebb is making out an autograph for a member of the Beatles. I guess the basic gist is that African-American musicians liked the Beatles a lot, but you didn’t see many black non-musicians in Beatle audiences either. To the Beatles’ credit, when they toured the United States in the mid-1960s, they included riders in their contracts which insisted that they would not play before racially segregated audiences.
